Definition: A person who is able to deal with difficult situations, and not be easily defeated, frightened or upset. A person who is physically and emotionally strong.  生理和心理上都很強大的人, 不輕易被恐嚇和擊垮。

Example 1: My grandmom is a tiny woman, but she is one tough cookie. 我的祖母是個瘦小的女子, 卻無畏任何艱難。

Example 2: Don't worry about Sarah. She is one tough cookie. 被擔心莎拉, 她非常堅強。

Tough 是很堅韌牢固的意思, tough cookie 就是一塊硬餅乾, 形容很強悍的人。至於為什麼用餅乾而非其他物品, 就不可考了。

阿甘的猜測是美國餅乾都軟軟的, 如果一個人像餅乾那樣軟很容易被壓扁, 不想被壓扁就得硬起來。再聲明一次, 亂猜的!  這種餅乾一般家庭都會做, 非常簡單, 阿甘以前也自己烤過。中間一塊塊咖啡色是巧克力糖

Tough cookie 最初是用來形容女性, 現在兩性都可以。但還是比較常看到女生被稱為 tough cookie。
