mental gymnastics

mental gymnastics  n.

 

Definition: the mental ability to distort the truth; inventive, complex arguments used to justify what is otherwise unjustifable 扭曲事實的心理能力; 很努力將不合理不正確的事情合理化

 

Example 1:  Jamie did some wild mental gymnastics to justify his hate towards immigrants. 傑米絞盡腦汁想出一些仇恨移民的理由。

Example 2:  The Trump supporters performed all sorts of mental gymnastics to deny the truth.  川普支持者運用各種扭曲的思考來否定事實。

 

Mental 意思是為心理上的, 精神上的。Gymnastics 是體操的意思。Mental gymnastics 的意思不難理解: 用腦袋練體操。

 

事實上, mental gymnastics 這用法剛開始很單純, 就是很努力思考的意思。但當前的用法大多是貶意, 拿來形容那種莫名其妙的人, 絞盡腦汁創造出一些讓人翻白眼的發言。

 

 

用身體練體操就好了, 對身心都有益。避免做 mental gymnastics 喔!
