soccer mom 是甚麼?  踢足球的媽媽? 看足球的媽媽?  都不是!  不過, 美國到處都是足球媽媽喔 !




soccer mom

Definition: a middle-class suburban woman who spends a significant amount of her time transporting her school-age children to their sporting events or other activities.  住在郊區的中產階級媽媽, 以孩子為生活重心, 成天忙著開車載送孩子往返學校, 運動練習和其他才藝活動。

Example 1:

Ellen:  Sorry I have to hang up!  Time to pick up my kids from school then drive them to the  lacrosse practice.   抱歉我得掛電話了, 得去學校接小孩然後送他們去練習曲棍球。

Ace: Talk to you later, soccer mom! 再見啦 足球媽!

Example 2:

I don't want to be one of those soccer moms.  I want to advance my own career.  我不想當足球媽媽, 我想發展自己的事業。

這幅漫畫是不少美國人對足球媽媽的刻板印象: 開車橫衝直撞, 自己小孩的去處優先。



足球媽媽的另一個特色是開大車, 通常休旅車或小箱型車, 才能把一堆小孩塞進去... 他們不但接送自己小孩, 也跟鄰居輪流接送各自的小孩。



soccer mom 這名詞這幾年常常聽到, 因為某些政治人物(特別是候選人)喜歡提到這個字, 以表示他們懂得中產階級婦女的心聲和需求。

在加拿大, soccer mom 則是叫 hockey mom 冰球媽媽。

台灣也很多媽媽每天忙著接送小孩, 但幾乎都是跑補習班才藝班, 所以 soccer mom 這個字就不適用了..... 不過想了解美國文化, 這個字還是挺重要。 你身邊或許沒有 soccer mom, 你一定在好萊塢電影電視裡頭看過喔!
