jump the shark

Definition:  a term to describe a moment when a TV show that was once great has reached a point where it declines in quality and popularity.

Example: After a few years, Jackie Wu's Sunday night TV show jumped the shark when it ran out of new ideas. The audience was tired of it, and the rating dropped.

I first learned this term from a program on VH1 (a cable TV channel) that talked about popular TV shows in the 80s and 90s. I found it really interesting and useful :-)
