elephant in the room

 

Definition: an obvious, major problem that people are aware of but avoid discussing because it is uncomfortable or awkward 房間裡的大象; 讓眾人難以啟齒、不願說破的事情  

 

Example 1:  Bob and Gina need to address the elephant in the room: their son is too short to play basketball.  包柏和吉娜必須正視沒人願意明說的真正問題: 他們的兒子太矮打不了籃球。

Example 2:  The elephant in the room is wheather we have enough votes.  所有人都知道卻不敢明講的問題是我們能否有足夠票數。

大象是非常巨大的動物, 如果出現在房間裡, 你不可能沒看到。

 

把大象比喻為顯而易見的事物, 是不是很貼切呢?

 

Elephant in the room 這個說法用在兩人以上場合。基本上是指在場者全都知道的事情, 很怕講破造成尷尬局面。
